Conley H. Hughes, Jr.
Reverend Dr. Conley Hughes, Jr. is senior minister of the Concord Baptist Church of Boston, an intergenerational congregation in Milton, Massachusetts. On December 26, 1987, the congregation extended a call to Reverend Hughes to become its pastor. Pastor Hughes has served as the sixth senior minister of Concord Church since assuming the pastorate on February 21, 1988. For over 26 years, Pastor Hughes has journeyed with the Concord fellowship, joining them in teaching the Gospel message; and in encouraging people to apply its principles to life situations.
In addition to his core duties as shepherd of the flock, Pastor Hughes enjoys assisting, advising and recognizing the gifts of men and women who are pursuing Christian ministry. He has served as an intern supervisor for seminary students; a mentor for the Pastoral Residency Program (Lily Endowment); and a seminary adjunct instructor. Pastor Hughes was appointed to serve as a Co-Facilitator for the Boston Micah (Clergy Formation) Group for 2014-2016 through the Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena).
Dr. Hughes has served as a member of several boards of Christian institutions. These include: the Board of Governors, Boston University/Danielson Counseling Center; the Alumni Advisory Committee, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton); the Board of Preachers, Morehouse College (Atlanta). He also served as a delegate to the General Assembly of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA; assisted International delegates for the General Secretary of the Progressive National Baptist Convention; and, served as president of the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts, and the New England Baptist Council.
Pastor Hughes is a graduate of Florida Memorial University (Miami); Boston University School of Theology; and the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (South Hamilton). He also pursued further study at the Massachusetts School of Law (Andover). He previously directed student support departments at Boston University and the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Pastor Hughes has served as preacher, mentor, university staff, field education supervisor for seminary students at five theological institutions, and pastoral mentor for pastoral residents in the Transition in Ministry Program of the Lily Foundation. Reverend Hughes has served as president of the American Baptist Churches of Massachusetts, the New England Baptist Council, and as an adjunct instructor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Wheelock College.
As part of his passion to support students, faith-based institutions, and to contribute to missional causes, Reverend Hughes has established the Bethany Foundation Ministry, Inc. He also has a deep interest in supporting educational institutions and advanced palliative health measures in Barbados; and, in the work of the Barbados Consulate in the U.S.
Dr. Hughes has served over 40 years in ordained Christian ministry; which includes over 35 years of service to two congregations. In addition to these congregations, Pastor Hughes has shared the Gospel in Europe and Asia. He is currently preparing two publications, Whispers of Love and Coming Home to Silence.
