Quiet Time: H&M Blackaby, Experiencing the Holy Spirit

Shaping Us To Serve– Many have held the view, correctly so, that God does not choose us because of any expertise on our part. When God summons us for His service, we come before Him, not perfect, but with potential. It is not who we are that is as important to the work of God, as what the Lord can do with us. In their book, Experiencing the Holy Spirit, Henry and Melvin Blackaby says, “Because God has a purpose for your life, He has sent you the Holy Spirit to enable you to fulfill the assignment He wants to accomplish through you.  It is always what God intends to do through us that’s most important. We see clear evidence of this in the Scriptures. Even those persons who were described as “upright” or “perfect,” were far from human perfection. In their moments of weakness, most of them responded with vulnerability at the least.  We note in the Scripture, however, it was the Spirit who prepared people for their assignments.  Isaiah prophesied the pouring out of the Spirit on Jesus, to fulfill His mission on earth. Isaiah describes the ministry the Spirit empowers through the Word; healing; comfort; and freeing persons who are captive by sin and injustice.  (Read, Isaiah 61:1, NLT). The Holy Spirit who has been sent to us, is the same who shapes us for the work of God on earth. It is never our efforts alone that bring transformation. Transformative change comes only through the gifts of the Spirit resident in the lives of all believers who are faithful to Christ. The skeptical Gentiles were assured, “Christ lives in you. This gives you the assurance of sharing His glory.” (See, Colossians 1:27b, NLT). The ground beneath every Christian is level. Wherever God finds us; or where we encounter Him, it is the Spirit of God who shapes us into someone who is useful. The Blackaby’s suggest, “God isn’t looking for proven leaders. He’s looking for those who have hearts that are pure and responsive, and then He equips them by His Spirit to become leaders. Isaiah was a member of a priestly clan which held standing in the Temple. It was not Isaiah’s family background that prepared him for his call to prophetic ministry. The experience Isaiah encountered in the Temple one day, revealed his imperfection. Admitting to his failures, the Spirit of the Lord humbled Isaiah’s heart, and he accepted the challenge to serve God. It was during that confession; God began to shape Isaiah for His service. (Read, Isaiah 6:5-0a, NLT).  Ezekiel was with fellow Israelites in Exile, when God spoke to him beside the Kebar Canal. Ezekiel saw strange visions, which culminated in God summoning him to proclaim his message to Israel – and to denounce the nation for its sins. God sent Ezekiel on a difficult task, where fear alone could have destroyed him. Ezekiel was told to stand up and listen to God. In doing so, the Spirit entered his heart, and he accepted the assignment for which he was being prepared. (Read, Ezekiel 2:1-3, NLT). The Spirit who enters, remains to shape and form us into the persons God intends us to become. The great work of the Holy Spirit is for character formation and the cultivation of spiritual gifts. We must remain in fellowship with Jesus Christ so the work of the Spirit may be effective within us. Paul exhorted Timothy to keep alive the spiritual gifts he had received. (Read, 2 Timothy 1:6-7, NLT). It is the Spirit who prepares us to respond more readily to God!

Shaping Us To Serve, Part 2 - The Spirit of God always has a way of shaping us into the special vessels for which we have been called into the Lord’s service. Regardless of age, background, language are any other factors, the Holy Spirit will direct us along the path we are to follow. In ancient times, the Spirit visited the believer and endowed them with abilities to perform certain tasks. Sometimes, this meant receiving a special revelation (word) concerning God’s plan for a particular time, as well as for the future. We see evidence during the birth of the Messiah, Jesus. Simeon, a devout and respected man, was told by God he would not die until he had seen the Child- Messiah himself. The Spirit directed Simenon to the Temple where he encountered the child Jesus, Mary and Joseph. This occurred after the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Jesus was likely taken to the Temple in Jerusalem by his parents for his brit; a ceremony of circumcision for young Jewish male children. When Simeon saw the Child- Messiah, he rejoiced and made the first public announcement and blessing. The Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon the Messiah’s mission, and the special pain Mary would endure witnessing the crucifixion of her son. (Read, Luke 2:25-35, NIV). The holy Spirit shapes all believers, whether through personal spiritual growth, or growth as a body of believers. When the Church began to reach the gentile world, the unity and rapid growth was the result of the Holy Spirit, working in and through believers. Despite persecution and threats, the Spirit gave Christians a mew peace and spiritual confidence. (Read. Acts 9:31, NLT). Henry and Melvin Blackaby (Experiencing the Spirit) note the before an after spiritual demeanor of persons in the Bible and their relationship to the Spirit. Before Pentecost, peter bragged quite a bit about what he would and would not do with or for Jesus. Peter had much to say, but most often shrank from his boastful demeanor when a crisis escalated. It was after Pentecost that Peter emerged as the presumptive leader of the apostles. Believers hearing Peter proclaim the Good News, and speak unashamedly about Jesus as Messiah, gave him the label as being “bold” and “fearless,” The Holy Spirit shapes our character in such a way that we can all be useful to the Lord. We will not all do the same thing, but each of us will d something to exalt Christ and honor the Holy Spirit. Paul told the Galatian Christians, that rather than pleasing “self,” each Christian should seek to please the Holy Spirit. Because the Holy Spirit engages the work of character formation, there are “everlasting” benefits that can be gained. As we mature in the Spirit, we will treat others good. A sign of the Spirit’s work in us, is exemplified in our character – and the godly impression we leave with others. (Read, Galatians 6:8b-10, NLT). We should never underestimate how God is shaping us for His great work in the world. Each day the Spirit is preparing us to join the Lord in His great mission to reconcile and redeem the human family for good!

When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for Him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took Him in his arms and praised God, saying; “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace.  For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about Him.  Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother: “This child is destined to cause

the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
